How much does Invisalign and braces cost for adults in Sydney? Real price ranges, what drives the cost, and how to choose the right option.
Short answer: In Sydney, most adults pay roughly $4,500 to $9,000 for braces and $6,000 to $9,500 for clear aligner treatment. For mild to moderate cases the two often cost about the same. The complexity of your teeth matters more to the price than the system you choose.
At Lifetime Smiles St Leonards, nearly all out patients choose clear aligners such as Invisalign, and hence we focus on excelling using them to align teeth. If metal braces are desired, you would be referred to an orthodontist.

Typical costs in Sydney
| Treatment | Typical range for adults treated by a general dentist |
|---|---|
| Minor aligner treatment (a few front teeth needing correction) | $3,500 to $5,000 |
| Metal braces | $5,500 to $9,000 |
| Full Invisalign to improve the bite, more severe crowding | $6,000 to $9,500 |
| Ceramic (tooth coloured) braces | Usually a little more than metal |
| Lingual braces (behind the teeth) | Usually the most expensive |
These are general ranges. Your own quote depends on your teeth.
What actually affects the price
- How much movement is needed. Straightening two crowded front teeth is a very different job to correcting a deep bite.
- Treatment length. Longer treatment means more aligners or more adjustment visits.
- Refinements. Some Invisalign cases need extra aligners at the end to fine tune the result. As long as you are wearing the aligners properly, the first of of additional aligners is included in the fee.
- Retainers. Every straightened smile needs retainers afterwards to keep them there. We included fixed and removable retainers with all aligner cases, where many other clinics do not.
- Who provides it. Fees differ between general dentists and specialist orthodontists.
Which is cheaper, really?
For simple cases, clear aligners can be the more affordable option. For complex bites or severe rotations, braces are often more predictable and may work out better value. However, braces will likely need more regular visits to the dentist, whereas aligners can be monitored remotely, and not require as many in person visits. Of course lifestyle and aesthetics of clear aligners vs metal braces also need to be taken into account.
The biggest hidden cost with Invisalign is not wearing it. Aligners need to be worn around 22 hours a day. If they sit in the case, treatment takes longer and may need extra aligners.

Does health insurance help?
Orthodontics falls under major/orthodontic cover on many policies, usually with a 12 month waiting period and a separate lifetime limit. After calculating the increased premiums, and serving the waiting period, most companies pay back around $600-$1200 per year, and does not make much of a difference in the end. Please contact the company to find out exact rebates. Normally the item number for aligners is “825” which you can submit for a quote.
Check your policy before starting. At Lifetime Smiles, we offer payment plans that spread the cost over the treatment period after an initial deposit is paid.
Frequently asked questions
Is Invisalign more expensive than braces? Not always. For mild to moderate cases they are often similar. Braces may be cheaper for complex cases.
How long does treatment take? Most adult cases take 6 to 24 months, depending on complexity.
Are retainers included in the price? The first set of fixed and removable retainers are always included in the fee for aligners at Lifetime Smiles. If you clench or grind your teeth a lot, they may wear out early, and you may need extra replacement sets at $300/arch.
